• ## Handling the four operations of mathematics

Posted on December 9, 2016 by in General

How would you handle the problem stated herein? This particular question requires the handling of determining the positive or negative components within the expression. It also involves the requirement to perform calculation within brackets first, i.e. [ …… ].

Now, lets look at the question in detail. We look at the component within the braket first, i.e. Within the bracket, we remove the internal brakets first, handling division and multiplication first. (-12) divide by (-3) we have 4. Then (-3) multiply by (-1) we have 3. The calculation within this bracket gives us 4 + 3 = 7.

Since there is a negative sign outside this bracket, then it would be -7.

Finally we have -7 + (-3), so effectively it is -7-3 = -10.

At Just-Math we get students to practice a lot of question of this nature. The objective is to ensure they fully comprehend the manner in which mathematics statements are properly handled so they can get the outcome correctly every time. Students in Standard Six should be able to handle these types of calculation with minimal problems. If your child face difficulties in addressing this type of question, then it would be proper to prepare them adequately so that they would not face difficulties when they move into secondary school.
