• Why children are weak in Mathematics?

Learning and mastering mathematics is like climbing stairs. Everyone starts with the lower step and progressively move onto the next step. Unless and until we can climb the first step with ease, the subsequent step would be more and more difficult. Imagine a young child, possibly at the age of 3. What is required for mathematics for a child as young as 3? I would say that the child must first learn to recognise and count numbers of at least up to 5. They should also know what 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 means relative to all the numbers up to 5. They must know that 2 is more than 1 and also 2 comes after 1.

Now let us look at a child who does not know what these numbers mean. Would you expect that child to be able to take on 1 + 1 ?

Similarly, if a child do not understand numbers up to 30, would you expect the child to be able to take on 25 + 1?

Let us take the issue a little further. Lets’ say a child is unable to take on 1 + 1. Would the child be able to handle 1 + 2? Definitely the child would not be able to comprehend the meaning of 1 + 2.

If a child cannot master each of the earlier hurdles along the learning curve, the problem would snowball to larger problems when they reach school going age where they are expected to know basic mathematics. What would you expect the teachers in school to do with these children? I believe they would try their best to teach, but I honestly believe that these children would not at all comprehend what the school teacher is delivering. Therefore it is crucial that children fully master numbers and their relationships early before attending formal school.
