Building skills in the Four Operations of Math (Add, Minus, Multiply, Divide)

What is the difference between mathematics and arithmetic? Arithmetic involves only the four operations i.e. addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Mathematics involves a more wider definition including dealing with fractions, algebra, calculus and the various branches of Mathematics.

In this section we shall look at the four operations of mathematics (defined as arithmetic).

Our specially prepared worksheets helps children master all the four operations, i.e. addition, subtraction, multiplication and division computation. The worksheets are prepared with small incremental difficulties so that children will not face much difficulties as they progress. With each progressive worksheets, children gain confidence in the area of study. They will no longer be doubtful of what they do in each step of the learning process.

To demonstrate how our method is used in helping children learn and master these four operations, we use a real life situation.

Let us assume that we have a 4 year old child enrolling the program. Upon registration, we will conduct a simple assessment (either orally or in writing). Let us also assume that upon completion of the assessment, we find that the child is only able to recite and identify numbers of up to 20.

From the assessment results, we will start by assigning worksheets that requires the child to recite and recognize numbers beyond 20. We will then gradually increase the numbers to 30, 40, 50 and so on until it reaches 250. Once the child is able recite and identify numbers up to 250 with ease, then it’s time to introduce the worksheet that requires the child to fill in the next number given a number, e.g. given 11 next number is (???). This type of worksheets reinforces the concept of  the addition of 1. Similarly we will assign worksheets for identification of next number of up to 250.

Once the child is able to easily identify next number and able to perform addition of 1 with speed, confidence and accuracy, then it’s time to introduce the addition of 2.
Again, the child will be given sufficient time and space to master the addition of 2 before moving to a higher number. The same process is repeated until the child is able to perform addition with different numbers with ease.
Our experience points to the fact that every child is able to master these skills with relative ease. The only difference is the time required to achieve mastery.

We recognize that every child has different learning abilities at different points in time. We therefore emphasize that comparing abilities of children to each other should never be done as it is counterproductive. We therefore urge parents to accept that different child learns differently, but ultimately, they will be able to master the area of maths given time and patience.
